Red beans and barley dessert is a famous Chinese dessert ("tang sui" or "tong sui" in Chinese) which basically consist of red beans, barley, sugar and milk. This dessert can be served hot or cold. Although it is relatively easy to cook, it will take some time for it to boil till soft.

Ingredients:

Dessert

  • 1/2 cup sugar

  • 1 cup red beans (soaked in cold water overnight)

  • 1 panda nus leaf /skrewpine leaf (tie into a knot)

  • 1/4 cup barley

  • 2 cups water

  • 4 cups milk

Method:

1. Add 2 cups of water, 1 cup of red beans, 1/4 cup of barley and 1 pandanus leaf in a pot. Bring them to a boil. You may want to soak the red bean and barley overnight if you want it to be cook(soften) faster.

2. Reduce heat to simmer. Cook until the mixture of red beans and barley are tender for about 2 hours.

3. Add 2 cups of milk and 1/2 cup of sugar into the pot. Stir well until the sugar dissolves. You remove the heat from the pot and leave it to cool down for about 10 minutes.

4. You may serve it hot or cold depending on your preferences. If you prefer to serve it cold, leave it to cool down for another 15 minutes and then put it in the refrigerator. The additional 15 minutes cooling time is required so that the heat does not spoil other items stored in the refrigerator.

Optional:

Replace white sugar with brown sugar. It will taste better.

If you are not able to find pandanus leaf, you may replace it with dried orange peel. This dry orange peel is easily found in any Chinese herbal/medicine shops.

If you do not like milk or lactose intolerant, just replace it with plain water.

Some of the best and most exotic French desserts include seasonally selected fruit. France is known for its wine and exotic dishes, but its desserts are equally popular all over the world. The collection of popular French pastries and desserts include cakes, tarts, flans and breads. The favorite ingredients in these desserts include apples and almonds, which are available in flaky pastry.

The French have always loved their desserts and it is treated as a course, which is typically served at the end of the meal. Generally in most countries desserts consist of sweet food but the French also like their desserts to be strongly-flavored and sometimes cheese will be served with dessert.

Desserts

The French desserts include recipes, which use a thick bottomed pan named the 'skillet'. The skillet has been vital to the conclusion of the dish, especially for their savories like crépes, waffles or gaufres, and their doughnuts or beignets. Even as the French desserts and patisseries are overflowing with delicious sweet treats one need not worry about weight. When you are having French desserts there is no need to worry about the amount of calories. Just check out all the thin women in France and you would know that something is there about the food, which helps them to stay thin.

Here are some of the most popular French desserts-

Croissant: This ancient standard dessert is something that you cannot go wrong with. The crescent shaped pastry is buttery and flaky and comes with the perfect balance of sweetness along with puffiness. The crispiness and softness of a croissant is unbeatable as it melts right in the mouth. The shape of the croissant is similar to the Islamic crescent.

Éclair: This French dessert is a variant of the donut and has been used as a variation in many American versions. The éclairs are long in shape and they are a thin pastry which is made from choux pastry. The éclair is then filled with cream and gets topped with blissful icing, mainly chocolate. Here, éclairs are not made by frying but by baking and you can fill it with coffee or even chocolate.

Pain au Chocolat: This is the cousin of the croissant and this French pastry is basically a croissant-type puff pastry. It contains yummy strips of chocolate, which is generally dark. This dessert has also been known as chocolate bread and tastes best when it is served hot with chocolate melting from your mouth.

Profiterole or the cream puff- This is one of the other French desserts that are actually little piece of heavens. These delightful little treats made from Choux pastry are made into small round puffs. As the pastry gets cooled down it can be served with either whipped cream or custard oozing from the center. You can make your own variant with some caramel sauce or other toppings.

Desserts are an oh so wonderful thing. I enjoy desserts every time I can get to them. Lucky for my health's sake, I only get to them about once a month or so. I'm still a sucker for a great dessert, and I always save room for some any time I'm out for a nice meal. Here are a few ideas for desserts that you may appreciate next time you're at a loss for ideas.

1. Dark chocolate pudding. It's a bit more bitter than mousse, but it's just as rich. If you like the idea of mousse but think it's too sweet, you'll love this treat.

Dessert

2. Bread pudding. This is a great, traditional dessert that you'll find at many restaurants (especially pubs), but the right bread pudding can be absolutely delicious. Try throwing some brown sugar into it and you'll be set.

3. Apple cider flavored donuts. Apple cider donuts are a delicious dessert. Glazed in apple cider with a traditional base, these are truly delicious. Throw in some caramel for an extra treat and you'll be wanting these every night.

4. Like white chocolate? Well, here's one more idea. White chocolate raspberry cheesecake. There's something about white chocolate and raspberry that goes really well together. Throw in a little cheesecake with a graham cracker crust, and this is a legendary dessert that you'll never stop thinking about once you've had it.

Anyway, here are four of the many great desserts out there. I hope I've triggered a new idea for you!

4 Great Dessert Ideas

I reheat my apple cider donuts with a DeLonghi toaster and a DeLonghi toaster convection oven. This always does the job.

Soda and desserts have been a staple part of your daily meal that you can hardly do without these two. But maybe if you knew the extent of the negative effects it can bring to your health, you would probably think twice about including these in your everyday diet. One of the most important facets of health that sodas and desserts have negative effects on is your dental health. The sugar in desserts and the sugar and acid in soda drinks can destroy your teeth, gums, and bones by damaging the enamel.

You may not know this but a regular soda can contain about 9 to 12 teaspoons of sugar. Desserts contain even more. A slice of pie may have about 13 teaspoons of sugar while a slice of chocolate cake may have 20 to 25 teaspoons of sugar. Imagine all those sugar coming into your body and you don't know. When sugar interacts with the bacteria found in your mouth, it produces acid that weaken gums, cause dental erosion, and ultimately damage your dental health. It only takes about less than 20 minutes for the acids in the mouth to eat away the enamel of the tooth.

Desserts

Even if you switch from a regular to diet soda, that won't really help much. Even though diet sodas do not have sugar, they have sugar replacements that can also cause damage to your teeth. Not only that, they also contain chemicals that cause tooth erosion and cavities. Sodas contain carbonic or phosphoric acid that dissolves the calcium out of the enamel of the tooth. When the teeth becomes exposed, the soft tissue underneath becomes more susceptible to bacteria invasion that can lead to cavities, tooth destruction and gum weakening.

The good news is cutting down on your dessert and soda consumption is not as difficult as you think. With the right attitude and these simple tips, you can say hello to healthier and stronger teeth in no time.

- Go cold turkey. If you can, completely eradicate soda and desserts from your diet. If you want to eat desserts, go for those that are low in sugar and made of fruits. If you don't think you can go cold turkey, take it slowly one soda can at a time.

- Use a straw. Using a straw to drink your soda will lessen the contact between the drink and the surface of the tooth. There is much less probability for your tooth to get damaged if you drink from a straw.

- Rinse your mouth. Right after you drink soda or eat dessert, rinse your mouth with water to eradicate the sugar and acid in your mouth.

- Make your own sodas or desserts. This way, you can be sure that what you are making are free of harmful chemicals and ingredients that can harm your dental health. All you have to do is to invest on soda chargers and cream chargers for this purpose.

- Go for healthier alternatives. Drink fruit juices, fruit shakes, fruit smoothies, milk, dark chocolate, or cold water in lieu of soda. Eat fruits, yogurt, and other healthy sweet items as desserts.

Remember, you only have one set of teeth. You should do everything you can to take care of it.

When it comes to fall baking, I enjoy making this Applesauce Cake because its easy, and I save time by not using fresh apples.

I prefer to bake mine in a tube pan, but you can certainly make it in a round cake pan. You can sift confectioner's sugar on top of your slightly warm cake or mix up some vanilla icing and drizzle that over top.

Dessert

Cake Ingredients:

1 1/2 cups applesauce

1/2 cup vegetable shortening

2 cups granulated sugar

1 egg, slightly beaten

2 1/2 cups all-purpose flour

1/4 teaspoon salt

1 teaspoon ground cinnamon

1/2 teaspoon ground cloves

1/2 teaspoon allspice

1 cup raisins, chopped

1/2 cup black walnuts, finely chopped

2 teaspoons baking soda

1/2 cup boiling water

Preheat oven to 350 degrees.

In a large mixing bowl, cream together the vegetable shortening with the granulated sugar. Stir in the egg and applesauce. In a separate mixing bowl, sift together the all-purpose flour, salt, cinnamon, cloves and allspice and set aside.

In a small saucepan, bring a 1/2 cup of water to a boil and stir in the baking soda until it has dissolved. Alternating with the flour mixture, slowly stir in 1/3 of the boiling water to the creamed mixture and then stir in 1/3 of the flour mixture to the creamed mixture. Continue doing this until the water and flour mixtures have been completely added to your creamed mixture. Stir in the chopped raisins and walnuts until all ingredients are well combined.

Pour batter into a well-greased tube pan (bundt pan) and bake in a 350 degree oven for 50 to 60 minutes or until done.

Let your cake cool completely before removing it from the tube pan. I recommend storing your cake in an airtight cake container.

Traditionally pies have been the dessert of choice for a Thanksgiving meal with the pumpkin pie being the gold standard for any meal. However there are several types of cakes that will go well with a Thanksgiving meal, many that incorporate the flavors and ingredients of similar pies.

Here are 3 great Thanksgiving cake ideas that will please your guests and your palate this holiday.

Desserts

Four Layer Pumpkin Cake - This cake will be the centerpiece of your dessert table and can serve as a replacement for the pumpkin pie. This cake is semi-homemade as it does take the time saving step of using a packaged mix and other ingredients readily available.

This cake uses a yellow cake batter with pumpkin and pumpkin pie spices added as well as a cream cheese/whipped topping frosting. Using 2 9" rounds, each cake layer is baked in a 350 degree oven 28-30 minutes, then cooled. After cooling, the layers are cut in two lengthwise then each layer is iced with the cream cheese filling with a generous sprinkling of pecans on each layer. Easy to prepare and not as time consuming as making a pie from scratch, this cake will be a crowd-pleaser for sure.

Orange Cranberry Upside Down Cake - This cake takes the cranberry to a whole new level. Forget the cranberry sauce this year and serve this cake! This cake is a spin on the pineapple upside down cake with cranberries and oranges taking the place of the pineapple.

A yellow cake batter, made from scratch, is baked over a layer of the fruit that is combined with brown sugar and butter (375 degrees for 35-40 minutes). This cake does call for fresh whole cranberries to be halved and this can be time consuming during the preparation of the ingredients but is well worth the effort when you taste this treat.

Sweet Potato Cake - this cake takes your "yams" to higher ground. Common in the South, Sweet Potato Cake is typically a yellow cake with sweet potatoes added in the batter as well as the appropriate spices such as nutmeg and cinnamon. This cake is always served with a coconut pecan icing that is a great addition to the overall flavor of this cake. Easy to bake (25-30 minutes, 350 degrees in 2 8" rounds) and prepare, this will be another prize in your dessert arsenal.

There are many more variations on the traditional desserts and flavors of Thanksgiving but these Thanksgiving cake ideas will take your ho-hum desserts and turn them into a new sensation with all your guests asking for the recipes. The main thing is not to be afraid to get away from the mundane and try one of these variations on classic desserts.

Fruit is a popular ingredient to use when making desserts because it is naturally sweet. It is also colorful, nutritious and you can eat it cooked or raw, making it a versatile ingredient.

There are many different ways to use fruit to make dessert recipes. You can serve a simple fruit platter, a fruit and cheese platter, fruit pies, fruit cobblers, fruit jello recipes and much more. You can use fresh fruit, frozen fruit, or canned fruit.

Dessert

Healthy Recipes with Fruit

Fruit contains natural sugar but is very nutritious and a great source of energy too. If you want low calorie recipes or low fat recipes using fruit, what about making some sugar free jello and adding fruit slices before the jello sets?

If you are using canned fruit, you might want to rinse the sugar syrup off it before using it in a fruit recipe. Frozen berries and other frozen fruit should be defrosted before you use it, unless the recipe says otherwise, because it is covered in ice crystals and will be very watery when it thaws, diluting your dessert perhaps too much.

Unusual Fruit Recipes

Nearly everyone has enjoyed a fruit platter or a fruit jello recipe but have you ever tried deep fried ice cream with blackberry coulis or a fruit pizza recipe? Recipes like these bring the fun factor back into cooking with fruit.

Wrap a cube of vanilla ice cream in a thin pancake and deep fry it, then serve it with a blackberry coulis for a delicious gourmet dessert.

Alternatively, what about topping a pizza crust with chocolate sauce, marshmallows, and slices of your favorite fruit? This delicious dessert combines indulgence with nutrition for a guilt-free dessert experience and you do not even have to bake it.

Easy Baked Pear and Pecan Pie

The following recipe is simple to prepare and serves six to eight people. Pears go wonderfully with spices like cinnamon and nutmeg and the pecans add a wonderful crunch. If you have apples to use up instead of pears, use those instead.

You will need:

  • 2 1/2 cups peeled fresh pear slices

  • 1 cup all purpose flour

  • 1 cup plus 1 teaspoon white sugar

  • 1/8 teaspoon salt

  • 1/2 teaspoon ground cinnamon

  • 1/4 teaspoon ground nutmeg

  • 1/4 teaspoon ground allspice

  • 1/2 cup chopped pecans

  • 1 lightly beaten egg

  • 3/4 cup plus 1 teaspoon melted butter

How to make it:

Preheat the oven to 350 degrees F. Grease a 9 inch pie pan with 1 teaspoon of butter and arrange the pear slices in the pan. Dust them with 1 teaspoon of sugar, the cinnamon, allspice and nutmeg. Mix the rest of the sugar with the rest of the butter in a medium bowl. Add the flour, egg, pecans, and salt and spread this mixture over the pears. Bake for an hour or until the pie is golden brown on top. Serve hot or chilled in slices, with cream or ice cream.

Did you know that some of the hardest restaurant recipes to obtain are those for desserts? It's true.

The big chain restaurants spend time and money creating special "signature" dessert treats. In many cases they invest more in coming up with a new twist on a gooey double-fudge ice cream cake than they do in figuring out more ways to dress up their hamburgers. It just makes economic sense.

Dessert

Loyal patrons of a given restaurant may really like the hamburgers, or the pasta, but it's those sinful desserts that often draw them back, meal after meal. Truly, a magnificent dessert can be the most addictive item on the menu.

That's why, as I've discovered through my own research, getting a recipe for a restaurant's top dessert item can be extremely difficult. But remember, it is just a recipe, after all--a list of ingredients plus instructions on how to put them together.

As I've written previously, the most direct way to obtain recipes for a restaurant's menu offerings--even desserts--is to ask. Often, though, you'll be politely rejected. Or, the manager might just vaguely tell you something like, "Well, it's just some vanilla ice cream and a little hot fudge and some nuts and a cherry," while leaving out important details: Whose vanilla ice cream? How is the fudge heated? Etc. Often there will be some secret ingredient that he will conveniently neglect to mention at all.

I'm grateful therefore to the many unsung heroes of the Internet who have done the detective work to discover the exact recipes used to create some of the most mouth-watering restaurant desserts in America--and who have shared them with the world.

If your favorite restaurant serves up an especially tempting dessert that you're just dying to get the recipe for, chances are you can find it on the Web. You just need to put your best search skills to work and be persistent. Someone out there has it--and has either posted it for free on some chat board or has put it into an inexpensive e-book along with other so-called top-secret recipes.

This is the information age, after all. And really, what more crucial information is there to us foodies than the knowledge to duplicate our favorite sinful desserts right in our own kitchens?

Secret Restaurant Dessert Recipes Are A Sweet Find

Butterscotch pudding has a rich and creamy flavor. If you like butterscotch, you will love this delicious layered dessert that uses butterscotch pudding as a main ingredient. This dessert is made in one large pan, but you could easily make individual servings in dessert glasses. Like all layered desserts, letting everyone see the layers makes for an attractive visual at the table.

Butterscotch gets its rich flavor from a combination of brown sugar, butter, cream, salt, and vanilla. It was first recorded in England in the town of Doncaster in 1817, though butterscotch-like sweets had been around since the late 1700s. Today, you can get butterscotch chips to put in cookies, butterscotch pudding and butterscotch candies. All of these use an artificial butterscotch flavoring instead of the original recipe of brown sugar and butter. Nevertheless, this remains a popular flavor. Butterscotch is an old-fashioned flavor that is ripe for a comeback in popularity. It is subtle and complex. Contrary to what some people may think, butterscotch does not contain scotch. The scotch part of the name comes from the practice of scotching, or scoring the cooling butterscotch into small pieces.

Desserts

Butterscotch sauce is often used on vanilla ice cream. You can make your own butterscotch sauce or you can buy it already made. Butterscotch pudding is also delicious on its own or with whipped topping. Make this layered dessert when you want to go the extra mile and make a good impression. If you really want to go all out, you can make the butterscotch pudding from scratch, though this version is much easier and takes less time. If butterscotch is one of your favorites from childhood, try this and the many other butterscotch recipes that you can find online. It is an old-fashioned flavor that many of us remember fondly. Why not introduce your own kids to this delicious flavor?
